Where can I learn electronic research techniques?
Answer
As recently as a few years ago, if you wanted to be considered a cutting-edge expert in computer-assisted legal research (CALR) you only had to learn to use Lexis and Westlaw. While Lexis and Westlaw are still the major CALR vendors, you must be able to make use of other electronic databases, including Bloomberg Law, as well as the internet to do minimally competent research.
Researchers can get information on the basics techniques for electronic legal research in Chapter 2 of the TMLL Guide to Legal Research, Electronic Research Techniques. This chapter includes the following sections:
- Electronic Research Basics
- Boolean Searching
- Field and Segment Searching
- Bloomberg Law, Lexis, and Westlaw
- Composing Searches
- Lowcost Subscription Databases for Legal Research
- Cost Effective Research Using Institutional Repositories
- Internet Research
