Can I borrow or request materials from other libraries by interlibrary loan?

Answer

In addition to Law Library borrowing privileges, current students, faculty, and staff with a valid UMB One Card may borrow books or request materials not available in the Thurgood Marshall Law Library from other libraries using interlibrary loan.

What is interlibrary loan?
Interlibrary loan (ILL) allows members of our community (students, faculty, and staff) to request materials needed for their research from a global network of libraries and other institutions.

What materials can I request using interlibrary loan?
You may request books, articles, book chapters, dissertations and theses, and even video and sound recordings.

How do I request materials using interlibrary loan?
Interlibrary loan requests are made using our interlibrary loan system, ILLiad. Login to ILLiad using your UMB credentials. You can also access ILLiad from the Law Library’s home page, by selecting the “Interlibrary Loan” link.

If you have not used ILLiad before, you will need to complete the First Time Users Registration Page. First-time users must register using their University of Maryland email address.

Once you are logged into ILLiad, select the type of item you want to request under the heading “New Request.”  To request an article, use the option to request a “Photocopy.” Complete the request form with the information you have available and then click the “Submit Request” button.

How will I get materials requested using interlibrary loan?
Check your ILLiad account for the status of requested items. You will receive an email when your item is available. Electronic items can be downloaded from ILLiad. Print materials will be held to be picked up from the User Services Desk, located at the main entrance of the Law Library.

When will interlibrary loan materials arrive?
ILL timing depends on a variety of factors, such as availability of an item, location of the lending library, the speed the lending library can find and send an item, delivery speed, and copyright issues. Materials that are available electronically usually arrive sooner than print materials. Delivery times can range from three business days to two weeks or longer.

How do I borrow items from USMAI libraries?
To borrow materials at libraries in the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions Consortium, see the FAQ “How do I borrow items from USMAI libraries?”

For more information, please contact our Interlibrary Loan team at interlib@law.umaryland.edu and t.white@law.umaryland.edu, or just ask us.

What about ILL requests for Journals?

To request an item via ILL for a journal, log into ILLiad with your UMID and password. In the Notes field of the request, include the name of the journal that is requesting the item. If you need assistance, please contact your editors or contact your journal's library liaison. More information is available on the Law Journal Orientation Research Guide.
